What the Body Truly Needs

Coming back to what was always there. On nourishment, rest, light, and what we keep forgetting to give ourselves.

There is an enormous industry built around the idea that health is super complicated. That it requires the right products, the right protocols, the right expert to decode what your particular body is missing. And while some of that i useful, a great deal of it is noise built on top of something much simpler that most of us have been moving away from for years.

The body is not a mystery that needs to be cracked. It is a living system with known requirements. Requirements that are, for the most part, not complicated at all. What makes them hard is not their complexity but how thoroughly modern life has displaced them.

The Foundations That Aren’t Optional

Sleep is not a lifestyle choice. It is when the body repairs itself at a cellular level, when the brain clears the metabolic waste that accumulates through the day, when hormones regulate, when the immune system consolidates its resources. Chronic sleep deprivation doesn’t just make us tired. It dismantles almost every system in the body, and no supplement could compensates for it.

Light matters in ways that seem forgetten. Morning sunlight sets the circadian rhythm that governs not just sleep but cortisol, digestion, mood, and immune function. The body evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in relationship with the sun’s daily arc, and it still expects that relationship. Spending most of the day under artificial light and most of the evening staring at screens is a relatively recent experiment, and the body has not caught up.

Food is information as much as fuel. Every meal sends signals to the cells about what resources are available, what threats are present, what the environment looks like. Processed food doesn’t just lack nutrients. It sends signals the body wasn’t built to receive, triggering inflammation, disrupting the gut microbiome, confusing the hormonal systems that regulate hunger, energy, and mood.

Movement is not exercise in the gym sense, though that matters too. It is the body doing what it was designed to do: walk, carry, lift, stretch, rest, repeat. A body that sits still for most of the day is a body being asked to function in conditions it was never built for.

None of This Is New

What is striking about all of this is how unsurprising it is when you hear it. We already know, somewhere, that we need sleep and sunlight and real food and movement. We know it the way we know things that have been true for so long they stopped feeling like knowledge and started feeling like background noise.

The difficulty is not that we lack information about how to be healthy, that should be just a normal condition. It is that the structures of modern life work against almost all of it, systematically and relentlessly, and changing that requires something more than willpower. It requires a different set of priorities. A willingness to treat the body’s basic needs not as luxuries to be fitted in around everything else, but as the foundation everything else is built on.

Because that is what they are. Not the things you get to when life slows down.
