The Most Innocent Pizza There Is

On a body that says no thank you, and a world that stopped listening

I was talking to my son today about how people just want more and more regarding food. Somewhere along the way we figured out how to engineer it to make us want more of it. More refined things. More hyperpalatable combinations. Takeaways made with oils not even my van would run on but hey, tasty. Neurotoxic and extremely addictive glucose-syrup added to almost everything you find in a supermarket shelf. More of the thing that makes you want another one.

And I realised I can’t even eat a normal margherita pizza these days without needing two days of clean eating afterwards. Two days. For a pizza. The most innocent pizza there is.

Meanwhile people are eating extremely controversial stuff at every meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and whatever is in the car.

When normal gets loud

Eat simply for long enough and the body becomes a very honest instrument. It stops putting up with what it used to put up with, and it says so. Amazing information right? The same information every body was giving before it learned to keep quiet and survive with whatever there was available.

The weird part is not that my body reacts. The weird part is that everyone else’s seems to have stopped. What I notice as a loud no, most people have trained into silence.

Built to make you want another one

Food stopped being just nourishment long ago and became another product designed to be hard to put down. Since then it turned into a weapon that creates all sorts of diseases. And still, it seems this circus is far from stopping and leaving the village for good.

Hooked. Tired. Disconnected. Those are the three words that describe a way of eating and a way of living at the same time. When food is built to keep you reaching, you lose track of enough, and not only at the table. All life becomes a reaching out to more excesses to satisfy an unsatisfying hunger. A black hole.

People ingurgitate no matter what, in every sense, and then suddenly they become sick. Physically, mentally. And that is not normal and it was never sudden. The body had been talking for a long time, and nobody was listening, least of all the person living in it.

Eat to live, not live to eat

Eat to live, not live to eat.

Said, some thousands years ago,Socrates

Whoever said it first, it holds. That order flipped, and eating stopped being the thing that fed a life and became the thing a life is organised around. The craving, the guilt, the reset, the craving again.

A tomato is still a tomato. Olive oil is still olive oil. The problem isn’t food. It’s what we’ve done to it. We need to remember what food was supposed to do in the first place.

I think it is much less about following a specific diet than about eating as close to source as possible.

Normal is not the same as fine

Eating like this, at every meal, has become so common that it no longer looks like a choice. It just looks like another day. But normal is not the same as fine. A whole society can drift into something strange and call it ordinary, because everyone around it is drifting too.

So here I am with my slightly offended body, saying no thank you to what creates havoc in my body like it’s a revolution, while the rest of the world says yes to everything, as long as it’s tasty enough, all day.

Food was never meant to be this, but to be what sustains us, not what keeps us down.

Real, and named in full

Eating real food creates freedom. When you know exactly what is in something, nothing is working on you behind your back.

The opposite of engineered is not complicated. It is whole things, kept simple, a simple basic diet and maybe something to add that helps our body thrive with nothing hiding behind a label. Most people feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the food today. And they are starting to ask questions. Some of them start taking supplements to help their situation, which makes sense. But many supplements are made from isolated, synthetic ingredients, a long way from the whole plants they started as. It’s the same question as with food: what is this made of, and how far is it from where it began?

That is why I’ve been looking at Zilara. Their call is whole plants and clean labels: herbs, wholefoods supplements, essential oils, fulvic minerals, black seed oil, teas, all pressed, dried, blended and bottled in one facility in Cincinnati, with every ingredient named in full and no fillers added just to make manufacturing easier. Every incoming lot is identity-tested, and every ingredient comes from a vetted supplier.

The founder’s conviction is that the body recognizes food, not chemicals. Their founder page says they build around whole-plant complexes rather than isolated synthetic vitamins. So basically, the whole plants makes sense again as nature created it.

It isn’t food the way a tomato is food, but it comes from the same instinct: keep it whole, keep it honest, and let people see what wholefoods can add back to their lives.

If you’d like to have a look at what that kind of simplicity looks like, here is Zilara.
